FOCAP will have Sheila Coronel as speaker for the 3rd Annual Teodoro Benigno Memorial Lecture on journalism on Aug. 26, 9:30-11 am, at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Makati City.
Coronel received the 2003 Ramon Magysaysay Award for journalism, literature and creative communication arts and is currently the director of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia Universityin New York. She helped found the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, which has been credited for a series of anti-corruption expose that helped spark public indignation against former president Joseph Estrada, who fell from power in 2001.
She will talk about the Philippine press, the 2010 presidential elections and the challenges posed by new media like Facebook, Twitter and blogging to traditional press.
The lecture, now on its third year, is held in honor of FOCAP founding president Teodoro Benigno, who once headed the Manila bureau of Agence France-Presse and served as the late president Corazon Aquino's press secretary. Admission is free but reservation is a must due to limited seats.
